Fat Thursday

Fat Thursday recipes

Fat Thursday is the last Thursday before Lent, as well as the first day that begins the last week of the carnival. On that day, it is popular to eat sweets, the most popular of which are donuts, Angel wings and cheese rings. Fat Thursday is a moving holiday, it does not fall on the same day every year. This year, it falls on 24 February. If you are planning to do some home baking on the occasion, I have a few suggestions in this post for sweets for Fat Thursday.

Recipes for donuts.

A donut is a confectionery food made from leavened dough. You can make leavened dough by combining flour with eggs, sugar, fat and yeast. Following that, form the dough into balls which, and after rising, fry them in fat. After frying, you can fill the donuts with jam, chocolate or pudding. You can decorate them with powdered sugar or icing. You can find a recipe for traditional donuts: HERE.

Spanish donuts, also known as “nests”, are less traditional donuts, which are prepared from choux pastry. To make choux pastry, you need to cook flour in boiling water and fat. Afterwards, cooled them down, add eggs to the pastry and form donuts using a confectionery sleeve. Just like other donuts, Spanish donuts are deep-fried. Polish cheese ring donuts or cheese donuts with a hole in the middle are my next suggestion for sweet for Fat Thursday. The main ingredients for the dough are flour, quark cheese, cream and eggs. Good quality cheese and cream are undoubtedly very important ingredients of these donuts. Their dough does not contain yeast, it has baking powder instead. Carnival roses recipe.

Carnival roses are crunchy cookies that resemble a rose flower. They are made from almost the same pastry as faworki, but they differ in shape from them. You can obtain the characteristic shape of the rose by cutting three discs of different sizes from the pastry, scoring the edges of each of them, then joining them together. Once fried, place some marmalade or jam in the center of each rose, and sprinkle the roses with powdered sugar. You can find a recipe for carnival roses: HERE.
