Scotch eggs are one of the well known dishes of English cuisine. It is served without and sauce as a cold snack at most events and gatherings. Scotch eggs are nothing more than hard-boiled eggs covered in a meat mince mixture, breadcrumbs and deep-fried.

I happened to prepare Scotch eggs several times by using chicken eggs. However, I must tell you that the balls turned out to be huge. For some time now, I have been using only quail eggs. The taste of the Scotch eggs made with these eggs is the same, the only thing that is different is the size of the balls.

Unlike the English, I serve the Scotch eggs with sauce, such as sweet chili or ketchup.

Deep-fried Scotch eggs

Ingredients for Scotch eggs.

  • 500 g turkey or beef minced meat
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard
  • a pinch of black pepper
  • 3 flat tablespoons of breadcrumbs
  • sunflower oil for frying
  • 8 quail eggs
  • a pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of freshly chopped parsley

How to make Scotch eggs.

Pour water into a pot and add a pinch of salt. When the water starts to boil, put in the quail eggs. Bring it all to boil and boil for 4 minutes. After cooking, pour out the boiling water, pour in some cold water instead and let the eggs cool down. After that, peel the eggs.

Put the minced meat, salt, pepper, egg, mustard and finely chopped parsley in a bowl, then mix it well.

Divide the mixture into eight equal parts. Flatten each part on your hands, place the cooked quail egg in the middle of it and form a ball. Roll each ball in breadcrumbs.

Pour the oil into a pot. There should be enough of it to completely cover the meat balls during frying. Heat up the oil and when hot, insert the meat balls. Fry them over a medium heat, turning them from time to time. The balls should be nicely crispy and well fried.

Place the fried Scotch eggs on the plate. Serve by themselves or with a sauce.

Good to know when making Scotch eggs.

I used turkey minced meat. You can replace this meat with beef. I would not recommend using pork meat as it is extremely fatty.

To make the mince meat mixture I used sapper mustard. You can use French or Dijon mustard instead.
