Poached pears

Poached pears in red wine

Fruits work great in cakes, salads, juices, regardless of whether they are boiled, fried and baked. Often they are a basis of meat sauces, sweet fillings used in pancakes and dumplings. I call a wide range of fruits as my favourite ones, I use each quite frequently depending on the season. There are certain types of fruits like blueberries, raspberries or strawberries that I can eat just by themselves every day.

I like using everything in my fruit basket to make various dishes e.g. I use apples to make cakes, bananas when making my porridge and kiwi and oranges I add to fruit salads. When it comes to pears I usually combine them with blue cheese or serve them in a salad, or not long ago, I used some to make a sweet dessert, which was actually extremely easy to manage. I poached the pears with red wine, spices and orange juice. I served the pears with a dash of whipped cream.

Pour the wine into a pot, add orange juice, honey, cinnamon stick, cloves and cardamom. Peel the pears and put them in the pot. Heat it all up, but do not boil it. Keep simmering on a low heat for 30-35 minutes. Once done, leave the cooked pears in the wine to allow them to cool down.

Serve the pears cold with a dash of whipped cream or ice cream.

Good to know when making poached pears in wine and orange.

I used Sauvignon blanc red wine.

The pears I selected were the Conference pears. Of course, any other sweet and soft types of pears will work in this dessert.

I opted for liquid acacia honey. It has a light taste and goes well with wine and orange juice.
