Fried fish cakes

Fish cakes

| | | |

Cakes are one way to combine fish with potatoes. For the preparation of cakes, you can use both fresh and frozen fish. I am sure it happened to you not once that, you have bought frozen fish, which after defrosting was completely unsuitable for frying. Such fish can, without a doubt, be used in cakes.

In these fish cakes, apart from the fish, I also used shrimps. In total, there were even more of them than fish. I combined the shrimps and fish with boiled potatoes, chili pepper and coriander. These fish cakes are perfect not only as a dinner dish, but also as a snack served at parties.

Ingredients for fish cakes.

  • 100 g fresh or frozen fish (e.g. cod)
  • 250 g fresh or frozen shrimp
  • 400 g boiled potatoes
  • 100 ml milk
  • a small bunch of fresh coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • a pinch of black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of chopped chili pepper
  • breadcrumbs for coating the cakes
  • sunflower oil for frying

How to make fish cakes.

Put the fish into a pot, pour in the milk and cook over a low heat for 7-8 minutes. Cool the fish, remove it from the milk and chop very finely or blend.

Defrost shrimps (if you use frozen ones), squeeze out the excess water then finely chop or blend them.

Combine the fish, shrimps, pressed potatoes, chopped chili, coriander, salt and pepper. Use a spoon to scoop up the fish mixture and form balls with a diameter of 4 centimetres each. Roll each ball in breadcrumbs then flatten them slightly on your hand.

Heat up the oil in a frying pan and once hot, put in the fish cakes. Fry over a medium heat until golden brown on both sides. Take out the fried cakes and place them on a paper towel.

Good to know when making fish cakes.

From the given amounts, I managed to make 14 fish cakes.

After shaping the fish mixture into balls, you can put the cakes in the fridge for 15-20 minutes. The cakes will thicken a little and they will be easier to fry.

There should be enough oil in the pan to reach the half of each cake.

The cakes can be served with lettuce, mango salsa, rice, and chili sauce.
