Chilli con carne
Chilli con carne is an ideal dish if you fancy minced meat.
Sometimes the question is asked on various culinary forums – what to do with minced meat. And the author of the question precises – “just do not suggest schnitzels or pasta because I’m bored of them”. My answer is simple. I would suggest making chilli con carne 🙂
Honestly, I personally do not mind pasta or schnitzels. But I understand that if someone is frequently eating them, they can actually become boring after a while.

Ingredients for chilli con carne.
- 500 g of minced pork
- 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil
- 1 large red onion
- 120 g of mushrooms
- 2 celery stems
- 2 bay leaves
- 3 medium carrots
- 1 can of kidney beans in brine (can 410 g)
- 1 teaspoon of freshly cut chili peppers
- 100 g of frozen sweetcorn
- 1 teaspoon of sweet paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon of pepper
- 1 tablespoon of salt
- 1 l of chopped canned tomatoes
- 100 ml of water
For serving: sour cream, nachos, grated cheese.
How to make chili con carne.
Place the minced meat in a large pot. Add a tablespoon of oil and finely chopped red onions. Fry on medium heat for 3 – 4 minutes.
Peel the carrots and cut them into pieces. Clean the mushrooms and cut them into larger pieces. Place the carrots, mushrooms and corn in the pot, in which the meat is stewing along with the onion. Pour the canned tomatoes, water and the spices (pepper, salt, freshly cut chili, ground pepper, bay leaf and caraway) in the pot. Increase the heat and bring it to boil. Once it’s boiling, reduce the heat and cook on a very low heat for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, add the cut celery stalks and drained kidney beans. Keep cooking for another hour, occasionally stirring it.
The finished dish can be served with rice or potatoes. I personally like serving it with grated cheese, sour cream and nachos. Try it 🙂

Good to know when making chilli con carne.
During winter season, you can buy only canned tomatoes. If you are going to do this in the summer season, go for fresh vegetables.
I did not add a lot of salt to this dish. If you don’t find the dish salty enough, add some salt according to taste.
The same can be said about the spices. If you like very spicy food, add more than one teaspoon of chili pepper.
Regarding the minced meat, I used pork but you can opt for beef, turkey or mixed meats.
