These are the best cheese sticks in the world. I got the recipe from a Hungarian friend of mine. They are great when served as a snack on family gatherings or TV watching sessions. You can make them in bigger quantities and freeze – once defrosted they taste just as good as fresh ones.
I used two different types of cheese to make these cheese sticks. I think it is a good idea to combine several different types of cheese in the same quantity. By doing that, you can get different flavours of the sticks.
Ingredients for cheese sticks.
- 350 g all-purpose flour
- 80 g grated Cheddar
- 60 g grated Gouda
- 250 g unsalted margarine
- 5 tablespoons of cold water
- 1 tablespoon of vinegar (20% acidity)
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon of salt
How to make cheese sticks.
Combine the grated Gouda and Cheddar in a bowl.
Sift the flour and add diced margarine in room temperature, salt, 50 g of cheese mix, water and vinegar to a bowl. Mix the ingredients with your fingers until they start coming together then fold the pastry.
Roll out the pastry to a thickness of half a centimetre. Crack an egg into a bowl and beat it with a fork. Brush the rolled-out pastry with the egg and sprinkle with the remaining cheese mix. Cut the pastry into strips of any length and thickness of about 1.5 centimetres.
Place the sticks on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Bake in an oven preheated to 175 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes.
Good to know when making cheese sticks.
If you don’t have vinegar that has 20% acidity, you can use one with 10%. If you do so, however, the proportions to be used should be: 2 tablespoons of vinegar and four tablespoons of water.
20 minutes is enough for the stick to be properly baked. Do not keep them for any longer, because they will become too hard.
