Bacon buns
If you think buns can only be made sweet, then I have to surprise you now.
Of course, the most popular buns made with quark cheese or apple filling are sweet. However, you can buy buns with a savoury filling such as cheese or onion in more and more shops.
Personally, I really enjoy savoury buns. I like sweet ones too of course, but often I buy or make buns, which have tomato sauce, meat and cheese in them. These kind of buns are great for parties. Your guests will love them and for sure they will be disappearing fast from a table.

Ingredients for bacon buns.
- 50 g raw bacon
- 1 big onion
- 100 g Gouda cheese
- 300 g all-pupose flour plus extra for dusting
- 170 ml lukewarm water
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 3 tablespoons of sunflower oil
- 20 g fresh yeast
- 6 leaves of fresh sage
- 200 g sour cream
- 1 egg
How to make bacon buns.
Dice the bacon into very small cubes, put it in a pan and fry over a medium heat for 3 minutes. After that, add the chopped onion, reduce the heat and continue frying until the onion is slightly brown. Once the onion is fried, remove the pan from the heat and let the onion cool down.
Pour the water into a cup, add yeast and stir until the yeast dissolves.
Pour flour, salt, the risen yeast and oil in a bowl. Knead for a few minutes and set the dough aside in a warm place for 15 minutes to rise.
After 15 minutes, roll out the dough to a thickness of about 0.5 centimetres. If the dough sticks to a pastry board or a rolling pin, dust it slightly with a little flour. Spread the cream evenly over the rolled out dough, sprinkle the cream with the grated cheese, fried bacon with onion and finely chopped sage. Roll the dough gently, starting from one of the longer sides. Once the dough is rolled up, cut it into 3 to 4 centimetre wide slices.
Place the buns in a baking tin covered with baking sheet. Gently flatten each bun with your hand and brush them with beaten egg.
Put the buns in a warm place to rise for 15 to 20 minutes. Once ready, put the tray in an oven preheated to 180 degrees Celsius for 25 to 30 minutes.
Good to know when making bacon buns.

I used raw bacon. During frying this type of bacon releases grease which allows the onion to fry nicely.
You can replace fresh sage with the dried one.
Gouda cheese can be replaced by Ementaler or Edam cheese.
