A simple homemade marinara sauce that works well with pasta, meatballs, grilled chicken breasts, or as a pizza sauce or addition to casseroles. These are just a few suggestions of dishes in which you can use this easy tomato sauce, because in fact it can be used for a whole lot of dishes as an addition or as a base. Preparing marinara sauce is super simple and very quick, because all you need to do is to fry onion and garlic in olive oil for a moment, add herbs and diced canned tomatoes and simmer for a while. In this sauce, I use canned tomatoes and they are chopped tomatoes. Such tomatoes will break into smaller pieces faster during cooking, and you can also save the time that you would normally have to waste on cutting the tomatoes. Ingredients for marinara sauce.

  • 400 g canned tomatoes
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 3 big cloves of garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • a small bunch of basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon of chili flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper
  • 50 g onion
  • 50 ml water

How to make marinara sauce.

Pour olive oil into a pot, add mashed garlic and fry for a few seconds over a medium heat. Next, add the diced onion and fry for 3-4 minutes over a medium heat. Then, add canned tomatoes, chili flakes, oregano, salt, pepper and water. Bring it to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. At the end of cooking, add chopped basil leaves.

Good to know when making marinara sauce.

There is nothing stopping you from preparing this sauce from fresh tomatoes, but first you need to process the tomatoes to obtain a form resembling the one of canned tomatoes. Canned tomatoes are therefore the best solution and option when making this herbal tomato sauce.

Marinara sauce can be frozen. After cooling it down, simply transfer it to plastic containers, close it tightly and place it in the freezer. Just defrost the frozen sauce before using it and you can use it immediately.
