Sweet and sour pork

Pork tenderloin is one of the most versatile and tastiest parts of pork. You can prepare it in many ways such as by frying, stewing, baking. Some time ago I tasted a fantastic baked tenderloin and I will try posting a recipe for it here sometime, but before that happens however, I have a recipe for pork in a sweet and sour sauce.

Sweet and sour sauce is a sauce made of sugar, ketchup, vinegar, soy sauce, pineapple, and vegetables such as peppers and onions. The sauce goes incredibly well with various types of meat – chicken, ribs and pork.

Ingredients for sweet and sour pork.

  • 500 g pork tenderloin
  • 2 tablespoons of sunflower oil
  • 250 g mushrooms
  • 2 big peppers
  • 1 medium sized red onion
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 250 g zucchini
  • 250 g carrot
  • 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar
  • 800 g canned pineapple (with juice)
  • 1 tablespoon of potato flour
  • 3 tablespoons of light soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons of ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • a small bunch of green onion

How to make sweet and sour pork.

Clean the tenderloin and cut them into thin pieces.

Cut the peppers into strips. Cut the carrots and zucchini into sticks, slice the onion and the mushrooms into small pieces.

Squeeze the garlic through a press, separate the pineapple fruit from the juice then pour the juice into a cup and add soy sauce, vinegar, ketchup, honey and potato flour to it. Mix it.

Put wok on the heat, pour in the oil and add the sliced tenderloin, then fry it for 10 minutes. After that, add the garlic and vegetables, fry for 5 minutes stirring occasionally. Once the vegetables are fried add the pineapple and continue frying for 2-3 minutes. Finally, pour in the sauce from the cup and sprinkle with chopped green onions. Bring it to boil and stirring constantly fry for an additional 2 minutes.

Serve the dish with rice or rice noodles.

Good to know when making sweet and sour pork.

I kept the wok on high heat during the entire time when making the dish. Once fried, the tenderloin was soft.

Due to the fact that the quantity of ingredients used in this recipe is quite big, you will need a large wok.

I used a total of one and a half large cans of pineapple. The pineapple needs to be cut into small cubes before adding it to the dish.

I used a mixture of green, red and yellow peppers.

After you wash the wok, dry it and brush it with a little oil. Store it like that.
