Kapsalon is a dish consisting of French fries, chicken shawarma, cheese and vegetable salad. This dish is prepared in baking tins, in which fries, shawarma and cheese are arranged in layers. The whole thing is baked for a few minutes in the oven, until the cheese melts, and then it is served with salad and sauce. As for the sauce with which kapsalon is served, it is usually a garlic sauce and some spicy chili sauce. In turn, the cheese that should be used when making kapsalon is Gouda cheese. Ingredients for kapsalon.

  • 500 g chicken breast
  • 1/4 teaspoon of caraway powder
  • 1 teaspoon of sweet paprika powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of spicy paprika powder
  • 1 teaspoon of oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of 7 spice mix
  • 2 tablespoons of sunflower oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika powder

For serving:

  • 350 g fries
  • 100 g iceberg lettuce
  • garlic sauce
  • 100 g tomatoes
  • 1 small red onion
  • 100 g salad cucumber
  • chili sauce
  • 100 g Gouda cheese

How to make kapsalon.

Cut the chicken breasts into relatively thin and long strips, then put them in a bowl. Add sweet, hot and smoked paprika, pepper, salt, caraway, oregano, a mixture of 7 spices and oil. Combine the meat with the spices and set it aside for 30 minutes. Put a frying pan on the heat, warm it up and once hot, place the marinated meat in it. Fry the chicken over a medium heat until the meat is lightly browned on all sides. Put the fried meat on a plate.

Place the fries in an ovenproof dish and put it in an oven preheated to 200 degrees Celsius for about 50 minutes.

Wash and dry the cucumber and tomato, and cut them into thin slices. Cut the washed lettuce into large pieces and cut the red onion into slices.

In two aluminium tins or in one baking dish, place the baked fries and the fried chicken on them, then sprinkle it with grated Gouda cheese. Put the tins in an oven preheated to 200 degrees Celsius for 6-7 minutes. After removing from the oven, put the chopped vegetables on top of the baked ingredients and drizzle it with garlic and chili sauce.

Good to know when making kapsalon.

The mixture of 7 spices is a combination of spices: cinnamon, sweet cherry seeds, ginger, nutmeg, black pepper, clove.

The chicken pieces should be fried in batches, not all at once.

When making this dish, I went for frozen fries, but if you want to use fresh potato fries, you may also do that. Before placing them in the baking tin, it is a good idea to pour a little oil over them.

I bake the fries for about 50 minutes to an hour. Depending on how crispy you want your fries to be, keep them in the oven for longer or shorter.

I used two aluminium tins, 10.5 by 23.5 centimetres each.
